Welcome to the August 2022 Newsletter
We hope you all had a wonderful August and have been having a great summer. Thank you to those of you who have shared your little ones’ fantastic swimming achievements over the holidays, you’ve all been working very hard and we have seen some fantastic photographs and videos. It’s also made our administrative staff very jealous of your super breaks away near and far! Lots and lots of you enjoyed the pool for private hire recently; I hope you made some great memories and enjoyed splashing around.
Our teachers and assistants have been enjoying a break too from the 17th to 30th Aug as you know classes were off. Our teachers, assistants and cleaners all had a well-earned rest!
We are now all back and raring to go for the new term.
Those of you at school, not long now until you are back and into a routine, well done mums, dads, nans and grandparents! The summer holidays can be really fun but also very exhausting! Enjoy that nice cup of tea or coffee.. (perhaps something stronger?!) alone once they are back! Baby and Pre-school Classes

August was a short swimming month for us but we packed in the fun before the break!
We kicked off the month with ‘Commonwealth Games’ where we focused on independent swimming, rotation, and balance. We saw some in-pool games to include, equestrian relays, basketball, synchronised swimming, to name a few! Well done to everybody who got involved, our swimmers seem to have really enjoyed this week, lots of confidence building and skills practice.
Week 2 took us to the Sensory Week. This week our children got to explore sensory stations, ‘falling’ into the water, holding on and back swimming with mirrors. We use lots of equipment in these lessons to make the activities fun and engaging.
Week 3, we were ‘In the Garden’ the theme, working around balance, body position and kicking our legs! The children were all really great at the seat hold. This activity works on the children’s core muscles, it encourages balance and strength. This hold will strengthen the baby’s spine and stimulate the vestibular system of balance. We all worked on confidence with water on our heads with the watering cans and we saw some beautiful jumping in!
In July we ran assessment week:
The little ones had the opportunity to achieve one of the following awards:
Starfish (0-12m) 1,2,3 or 4
Clownfish (12-24m) 1,2,3 or 4
Seahorse (2-4 yrs) 1,2,3 or 4
If you were away this week, you still have the opportunity to purchase an award, your teacher will have assessed you on previous classes. Should you wish to purchase one, the slips, envelopes and buckets will be poolside for a couple of weeks. Alternatively, pop into the Stanway pool anytime.
The cost of the badge and certificate inc postage is £5.20
(If you wish to purchase the certificate only this is £2.70)

Academy Swimmers
Our Academy swimmers have been working hard on their rotations in the water, our Sea Turtle swimmers worked on their front and back paddle body position and their legs. We practised sinkers in the water and push and glides. Our Advanced Sea Turtles were introduced to competitive push and glides, they worked on breaststroke arms then legs. Sealions were tasked with mastering their dolphin leg kicks, which was really great to see. Dolphin and Whale classes worked also on their competitive starts and their body positions and we saw some super front and back crawl drill work.
Everybody worked very hard this month and we look forward to seeing you all back in the pool this week.
I am pleased to advise you that W/C 19th Sept we shall be running a distance assessment week for all of the child only classes.
This will give our Academy swimmers of all levels the opportunity to achieve a distance award certificate, the strokes that will be assessed this time are –
Strokes:
- Mini/Sea Turtle – Back Paddle
- Advanced – Back Crawl
- Sealion – Front Crawl
- Dolphin – Front Crawl
- Whale – Front Crawl
After your class your teacher will hand you a slip of paper, this will give you the distance award achieved. You now have the opportunity to purchase a certificate. If your child hasn’t quite reached the required distance for a certificate you may be awarded a Well Done Certificate.
(No badges for distances I am afraid only skills assessment weeks)
The cost of the certificate is £2.70 inc postage
Please bring the correct money – There will be mini envelopes at the pool for you to leave your slip and money and a bucket for you to pop them into.
Certificates are cash only.
If you wish to purchase any of the previous distance achievement certificates you can also – £1.20 per certificate
Should you wish to save the postage, you can collect your certificate from the Stanway pool front desk at any time.

I am a Mum to three children – two boys and a little girl in the middle. I got involved with Mini Swimming after bringing my youngest along aged 4 months.
I always loved swimming growing up and coming along to the classes made me realise that I want to teach swimming!
The classes are fun and it is amazing to see how baby activities develop into swimming strokes. I started coming along to the pool voluntarily to begin with and have now started my teaching courses which I am having such a fun time doing and putting into practice.

We are delighted to congratulate Callum and Emaan on passing their teaching exams. They have also been working really hard on their in-house training. Lots of you will see them in some classes very soon.

Looking ahead to September
Throughout September we will be working various techniques to improve our skills in the water, working towards that Independent swimming and confident children. We have fun-packed lessons for all ages and abilities, see below for the theme weeks we have coming up:

Academy swimmers will also be having Assessment Week, week commencing 19th September.

Baby Bonding and Introduction to swimming course
Are you or somebody you know due to have a baby soon, or had a baby recently.
Our next course is starting on the 15th September
This will be a six week course specifically tailored to our tiniest swimmers aged 6 weeks to 4 months. The class is all about a gentle and calm introduction to baby swimming full of lots of special activities just for our tiny ones and it will be a beautiful bonding experience. Taught by our most experienced teachers we will have only 5 spaces per class and everyone will start together. At the end of the classes the babies will move into a starfish class either with their new mummy friends or separately, whichever they prefer.

NEW POOL!
We cannot wait to get started at the Colchester County Girls’ High School. Classes will commence on the 6th Sept.
This pool will be for our Advanced Sea Turtle and above swimmers. We can’t wait to see how well your children progress in this pool on their stamina and stroke. Private Hire
The pools in Lexden and Stanway are available for private hire.
Enjoy our beautifully warm pools all to yourself or share some swim time with a friend or family. There is a maximum of 4 adults and 4 children for any booking in most cases. The pool is exclusively yours for one hour including changing time. We offer private hire as a one-off ad-hoc event or a repeated booking at the same time every week for 6 weeks. The benefit of booking in blocks of 6 is that firstly it’s cheaper per session and secondly your slot is reserved for you for the weeks beyond your 6 weeks. We always give our regular slot bookers first opportunity to book again before the slot is released for others to book in.

Private Lessons
We have a few slots for private lessons available, times and days below . A private lesson is one child with one teacher for 30 mins with the whole pool to yourselves. The cost is £33 per lesson or £185 for 6 booked together.
