Academy Classes (3-10 year-olds)

Swimming lessons for 3-10 year-olds

Our academy classes are grouped by level starting with our Seaturtles who are our non swimmers and all the way up to our sharks and whales who we then arrange a trial to join the local competitive swimming club if the children want to continue swimming.

The team at Mini Swimming; teaching is what they are brilliant at and what they love.

At Mini Swimming whilst we would love to find a future Olympian, what we really care about is every year that lots and lots of children learn to swim with us who go on to have a life long love of the water. That when they grow up and have children that they take them for swimming classes because they remember how much they loved them as a child. We want children racing out of school excited that today is their swimming day. We don’t have reluctant children being dragged to the pool. Our swimmers are taught to swim all four strokes to a good standard. We teach them right from the start the correct techniques so we don’t have to re-teach them later on.

We make sure that our swimmers are happy in the water. We can teach any child to swim, but a happy one will learn quicker and easier and will have a positive association with  swimming forever.

Our academy classes are grouped by level starting with our Seaturtles who are our non swimmers and all the way up to our sharks and whales who we then arrange a trial to join the local competitive swimming club if the children want to continue swimming.

Our classes are small in size, with usually no more than 6 to a class with two teachers. With our small classes, excellent teachers and a focus on your child being happy and confident we know our academy swimmers progress quickly through the levels. All children are treated as individuals and we celebrate every child’s progress, not just our future Olympians! We give out lots of teacher awards when we see something brilliant.. brilliant listening, brilliant try at jumping, brilliant first swim, brilliant tumble turn and so on.

The team at Mini Swimming don’t see teaching as their job, They see it as their passion and vocation. Teaching is what they are brilliant at and love.

Mini Turtle – New Swimmers (0-10 Metres) 3-4 yrs old

Once a child is ready to swim without mum or dad, which is usually around 3 and a half we move them to a Mini turtle class which is a structured class where parents are poolside and we are focusing on learning to swim without aids. This class uses language specifically for 3-4yr olds and has a pace to match. We still have fun in this class and we all look forward to coming, but we also look forward to assessment week and giving out those first 5m and beyond certificates. On assessment week there’s not a dry eye in the house! Including the teachers….

Parent and Child Sea Turtle (3-6 yr olds)

Our parent and child sea turtle classes are designed for children who are ready for a more formal swimming lesson that is focused on proper swimming but aren’t quite ready to go it alone in the pool without a parent. The classes are designed to take a non or new swimmer and get them working towards their first 5-10 metres. Your child will learn correct body position along with the proper leg and arm technique. This class is perfect for developing water confidence and getting your child swimming in the pool without you. Children must be at least 3 years old. Parents are there to support, encourage, repeat instructions and maintain social distancing.

Seaturtle- New Swimmers (0-10 Metres) 4-10 Yrs old

Our seaturtle classes are for children who are school aged who cannot yet swim unaided 5m front and back. Classes are small in size and we focus on making sure we build your children’s water confidence and basic skills. The class is busy ad we keep the children swimming front and back for as much of the class as possible. As the classes are small they al get lots of individual attention and feedback.  Our seaturtles look forward to coming every week. We run regular assessment weeks and all parents get involved cheering every child on for their first solo swim and often there isn’t a dry eye in the house! Including the teachers…. Your child’s first solo swim is as exciting to us as their first steps were for you.

Advanced Sea Turtle – Progressing Swimmers (5-10 Metres)

Our Advanced Sea Turtle Classes are designed for those children who are confident to jump into the water and get across the pool but have no real technical ability as such. Children should be able to cover a distance of 5+ meters to start in this class. This class will work on technique and stamina. Your child will learn correct body position along with the proper leg and arm technique. This class is perfect for developing correct body position and working on breathing correctly. These classes will focus on front and back swimming.

Sea Lion – Progressing Swimmers (25-50 Metres)

Our Sea Lion classes build on the foundations set out at the Sea Turtle levels. Arm and leg technique will progress from a paddling action to the proper Front and Back Crawl whilst introducing them to the good breathing techniques. This class will also introduce Breast Stroke and lifesaving skills. We would expect all Sealions to be able to swim at least 25m front crawl and back stroke before they enter the class.

Dolphin – Competent Swimmers (50-100 Metres)

At Dolphin level, swimmers are now swimming at a competent level with their Front Crawl, Back Crawl, and Breaststroke. This class will work on technical improvements to each of these strokes whilst also working on stamina and strength. This class will also introduce swimmers to Butterfly. We would expect all Dolphins to be able to swim at least 100m front crawl, back stroke and 50m breast stroke before they enter the class.

Whale – Good Swimmers (200+Metres)

Swimmers at our Whale level should now be familiar with all 4 competitive strokes. Practices will be used to improve technique and pace to get swimmers swimming more efficiently and at a quicker pace. We would expect all Whale’s to be able to swim at least 200m front crawl, back stroke and breast stroke and 50m butterfly before they enter the class.
