July was a great month, we kicked off the month with ‘Independence Day’ where we focused on our Independent swimming away from our grown-ups. We saw some in-pool baseball, we had hot dogs and even saw some ‘fireworks’ and plenty of imagination was used to get in the get holds and techniques right.

Week 2 took us down to the Teddybears’ picnic, we saw some fantastic seatholds where we work on core muscles to sit upright, we practised some front and back swimming as well as holding the bar practice.

Week 3, we couldn’t have timed this week any better, especially with it being St. Swithin’s day on 15th July! In line with the soaring heatwave we planned our ‘Wonderful Weather Week’. Off we went to the beach, where we practised ‘sunbathing’ on our backs. We then swam under a rainbow and even finished off with some sledging on the snow!! – Typical British weather with the rapid change!

Week 4, our final week in July, our baby and pre-school swimmers enjoyed assessment week where they had the chance to achieve their next assessment award.

The little ones had the opportunity to achieve one of the following awards:

  • Starfish (0-12m) 1,2,3 or 4
  • Clownfish (12-24m) 1,2,3 or 4
  • Seahorse (2-4 yrs) 1,2,3 or 4

If you were away this week, you still have the opportunity to purchase an award, your teacher will have assessed you on previous classes. Should you wish to purchase one, the slips, envelopes and buckets will be poolside for a couple of weeks. Alternatively, pop into the Stanway pool anytime.
The cost of the badge and certificate inc postage is £5.20
(If you wish to purchase the certificate only this is £2.70)

Please bring cash.
If you swim at the Stanway pool you can purchase this on your way out – No postage £3.70 for badge & cert or £1.20 cert only.

Academy Swimmers

Our Academy swimmers have been working hard on their push and glides. A swimmer who swims with correct technique can travel in water with their body as close as possible to the surface of water. Swimmers need to do a variety of drills and practices to learn the correct technique of different strokes.

Skills should be taught correctly and practised regularly to make sure skills are learnt properly. Not doing enough streamlining and gliding practices, especially when learners are at the early stages of learning to swim, can result in inefficient stroke development and bad swimming habits. Bad habits that swimming teachers get to see very often are lifting up the head out of the water (rather than turning head to the side) during side breathing when swimming front crawl, or taking a breath when swimming breaststroke in an uncoordinated fashion, and out of sync with arms and legs. We regularly perform drills which work on streamlining and gliding. In doing so, we are teaching correct technique, right from the beginning.

We worked on rotation and flotation in the water also which is key for many reasons. These are also crucial life saving skills. We have practised our float-to-live skills. We are sure many of you will have seen the news recently, of people tragically losing their life at sea whilst enjoying the wonderful weather.

If you found yourself struggling in the water unexpectedly, your instinct would tell you to swim hard. But cold water could make you gasp uncontrollably. You should ‘Float-to-live’

The 5 steps to know how to float are:

1 – If you’re struggling in the water fight your instinct to thrash around
2 – Lean back, extend your arms and legs
3 – Gently move them around
4 – Float until you can control your breathing
5 – Call for help[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://miniswimming.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/floating.jpg” title_text=”floating” force_fullwidth=”on” _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” transform_rotate=”0deg|0deg|355deg” border_radii=”on|20px|20px|20px|20px” border_width_all=”10px” border_color_all=”#F05B85″ box_shadow_style=”preset4″ box_shadow_color=”#134B63″ global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”rgba(10,0,2,0.07)” custom_padding=”9px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”||1px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” header_2_font=”|800|||||||” header_2_text_color=”#F05B85″ header_4_text_align=”left” header_4_font_size=”36px” text_orientation=”justified” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”||21px|||” header_2_font_size_tablet=”” header_2_font_size_phone=”30px” header_2_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Hello! I am Keira

I started in 2014 as a trainee swimming teacher, as the years have gone by, I have done almost every job going at Mini Swimming!

I now do a little bit of teaching, I’m a Senior Coach. I absolutely love my job and genuinely believe that our lessons are the best there are. I see children every day that I remember as little babies and it is such a pleasure to watch them learn to be confident swimmers.

When I’m not working, I dabble in the parenting of my three children; Quincy, Eliza, and Arima, who all love the water. This doesn’t leave a lot of free time, but when I do, I am all for being outside, walking, and adventuring to find out what is around the next corner.. and I am often followed by three slightly less enthusiastic participants!

I feel so lucky to enjoy what I do and be part of the little Mini Swimming family with some of the best people – and hopefully, you are all enjoying what we do too!

Looking ahead to August

Taking us into August we will be working various techniques to improve our independence in the water, getting our littles ones used to the floats in order to gain more independence from you. We have fun-packed lessons for all ages and abilities, see below for the theme weeks we have coming up:

  • Commonwealth Games – We shall all warm up – Nice big stretches to get you ready for the events – We have an action packed lesson plan ahead. Get ready to throw javelins, have an Equestrian relay race, play basketball and the 100m (slow) sprint are just some of the events we have planned for you.  Our academy children shall be joining in as it’s such a special occasion as we are hosting the games this year.
  • Sensory Week
  • In the Garden

Private Hire

The pools in Lexden and Stanway are available for private hire.

Enjoy our beautifully warm pools all to yourself or share some swim time with a friend or family. There is a maximum of 4 adults and 4 children for any booking in most cases. The pool is exclusively yours for one hour including changing time. We offer private hire as a one-off ad-hoc event or a repeated booking at the same time every week for 6 weeks. The benefit of booking in blocks of 6 is that firstly it’s cheaper per session and secondly your slot is reserved for you for the weeks beyond your 6 weeks. We always give our regular slot bookers first opportunity to book again before the slot is released for others to book in.

All £50 for one hour (£55 bank hols)
£90.00 for 2 hours (£100.00 bank hols)

Our pools will be closed for lessons Wednesday 17th Aug to Tuesday 30th Aug – The Lexden & Stanway Pools will be open during this time for private hire only.

Hall of Fame

At Mini Swimming we love to recognise brilliance. Our Hall of Fame is dedicated to our Swimmers of the Week, Highlights of the Week and Teacher Awards. If your child has had an award, we would love it if you can share their photo with their certificate with us so we can add them to the hall of fame. You can see it here.

Here are a few of our fabulous swimmers…

Baby Bonding and Introduction to swimming course

Are you or somebody you know due to have a baby soon, or had a baby recently.

Our next course is starting on the 3rd August

This will  be a six week course specifically tailored to our tiniest swimmers aged 6 weeks to 4 months. The class is all about a gentle and calm introduction to baby swimming full of lots of special activities just for our tiny ones and it will be a beautiful bonding experience. Taught by our most experienced teachers we will have only 5 spaces per class and everyone will start together. At the end of the classes the babies will move into a starfish class either with their new mummy friends or separately, whichever they prefer.

Following course starts, 15th September [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”rgba(10,0,2,0.07)” custom_padding=”8px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”3_5,2_5″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”-8px|auto||auto||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”3_5″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” header_2_font=”|800|||||||” header_2_text_color=”#F05B85″ header_4_text_align=”left” header_4_font_size=”36px” text_orientation=”justified” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”||2px|||” hover_enabled=”0″ header_2_font_size_tablet=”” header_2_font_size_phone=”30px” header_2_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″ min_height=”223.6px”]
