Our big birthday

We celebrated our 10th birthday last month and we asked our swimmers to share their memories with us. Thank you to everyone who took the time to post their photos and memories. The whole team has loved reading and looking back at those photographs and reminiscing! Please do keep sharing your memories with us by going to Mini Swimming Memories

The winner of the big birthday competition to win 10 free lessons is Elise Conway.

Congratulations! Elise shared with us her memory of Grace.

December 2019, Elisie started with us swimming in Lexden, Sadly Lockdown came and Grace took a knock in confidence, along with many many other children. Grace moved to Stanway and had a wobbly start. There were stops and starts with the forced closure of swimming pools but determination from Grace, her parents as well as Jessie and Sam, we are there! Grace is swimming independently and earning her badges. Well done Grace! We are delighted you are our Winner.

We kicked March off with World Book Week for all levels, and the teachers and assistants jumped at the chance to get dressed up! The Columbus team had you all wondering Where’s Wally? (aka Laura) and we all appreciated Gangsta Granny Corin in his pearls! We all know the Colchester team don’t need an excuse to jump into a theme, can you guess who they were dressed as? Siobhan had a whole class of cuteness as her Starfish class came in full costume over at our Stanway pool! CUTE!

The lesson was full of our favourite stories, from washing our knobbly knees and turned out toes, like The Gruffalo, to practising our water confidence by getting our faces close to the pool and encouraging a streamline body position when Going on a Bear Hunt…“We weren’t scared!” Even our academy swimmers got to join in with some Very Hungry Caterpillars collecting lots of delicious treats, and an obstacle course of woggles and hoops when it was the older children’s turn to go on a Bear Hunt. You’re never too old for a story!

Streamline is the word of the month!

Even when having lots of fun (and getting a bit peckish) during Big Breakfast Week, we’ve been practising the super important life-preservation skill of rotating in the water, for Starfish Classes right up to Seahorses. Rolling from our fronts to our backs, where we can float and we can breathe, was the best way to lead-on from our back swimming and floating last month.

Streamline has been the word of the month, we’ve practised being streamline on both our fronts and backs. A streamline body position is crucial for almost all strokes. Our Sea Turtles have made great progress getting their faces in the water, which led to lots of them attempting to get sinkers from the pool floor, even where they may previously have not felt confident. Bubbles and breathing have been a part of all classes, from those super Sea Turtles we mentioned to our Sea Lions and Dolphins, who have been practising rhythmic breathing. This goes to show where those first baby bubbles can lead to! Breathing out and controlling the breathing is a tricky business but this can be practised at home by blowing bubbles in the bath (goggles optional), the key is to blow out when our face/mouth is in the water and pause before taking a breath in when the face is out of the water. Our teachers love to hear about your homework so get blowing!

We also must congratulate all of those incredible Dolphin swimmers who have moved into our brand new Whale class! The Whale class is all about water skills where the children learn how to master those tumble turns and competitive starts, giving the children the whole package to take their swimming journey to the next level.

Team News

A big hello this month to Kim and Millie, who have joined our Gladwins and Colchester teams.

Sadly, Rory has left the team this month as the demands of his accountancy career has increased. Rory has promised he will be back to cover holidays etc so it’s not the last we’ll see of him. For now we wish Rory all the best; we’ll miss seeing him on Saturday morning.

Employee of the Month

A massive congratulations to Kayleigh Bronson, this month’s Employee of the Month. She went above and beyond this month.

A parent was taken ill during her child’s lesson. Kayleigh, thinking only of the family, took them both home, 20 miles away, in her own car to make sure they returned safely. We’re SO PROUD of Kayleigh’s actions and wish the family a speedy recovery.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”rgba(10,0,2,0.07)” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” header_4_text_align=”left” header_4_font_size=”36px” text_orientation=”justified” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”||21px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Hi, I’m Heidi

I’m a Swimming Teacher and Assistant here at Mini Swimming.

Originally from London, I now live near the seaside with my two beautiful children, who are my world.

From a very young age, I loved being in the water, and first started training to be a competitive swimmer at the age of four! My parents still have all my certificates and medals including my first ever certificate for a one-width front paddle, which my Dad still proudly shows to visiting friends and family!

I first came across Mini Swimming when they opened up classes in Frinton in August 2015. At that time my son was four and my daughter was two. I had found the local public pool too cold and crowded to teach the children to swim, so I decided to find a swimming school and invest in some swimming lessons. I wanted to ensure that they would be taught in a safe, happy, and relaxed environment, so they would quickly develop an enjoyment of being in the water and then feel confident to take part in the lessons.
I couldn’t have been happier that I chose Mini Swimming.

Steve was our first Teacher, later followed by Sam. Both invested the time to get to know us so that my children and I got the most from each lesson and progressed at a pace we were comfortable with. We were never rushed or pressured into doing any activity.
I was impressed by their knowledge of the theory behind each activity and how safety was always a top priority. I always felt that my children were safe at all times. They made each lesson fun and engaging and swimming quickly became our favourite thing to do all week!

A few years later, Mini Swimming advertised for a Swim Assistant at their Frinton pool and I jumped at the chance to be part of the team. Since becoming a Mum, I decided that I wanted a career change and that I would love to work with children. I couldn’t think of a better way of doing this and I could combine it with my love for swimming!

I have recently trained for an STA Baby and Pre School Teacher qualification and an STA Level 2 Award in Teaching Swimming. This means that I now get to teach my own classes of swimmers. I feel it’s a real privilege to get to know our lovely swimmers and their families and to be involved in their swimming journey.

From the joy of a baby’s first swim with Mummy, Daddy, Nanny or Grandad to the excitement of a child’s first solo swim, there is always something special to be part of.

There’s lots of fun and laughter and occasionally a few tears too!! But it’s all very rewarding…. and it feels so much more than a job.

I hope I get to meet you soon!

Looking ahead to April- Head Coach talk:

We are going to hop, skip and jump into April and Easter where we will be working on our propulsion (that’s kicking to you and me) and our water confidence. Confidence is king when swimming but doesn’t come naturally to everyone, especially if you are not a confident swimmer yourself. Our teachers and assistants are at hand to help build the confidence of everyone in the Mini Swimming family. We will be taking a short well-earned rest at Easter but that doesn’t mean your swimming has to stop, our Lexden and Stanway pools are available for private hire, contact the office for further information.

The academy children will enjoy a water skills lesson full of those life saving floats, perfect pencil jumps and treading water, to name but a few as we work towards our water skills assessments. These play a big part in completing the criteria to move up to the next level and the children and teacher all enjoy this lesson and see all those incredible achievements.

One of our most popular lessons will be making a comeback as we don our capes and masks for, you’ve guessed it… Superhero Week! Evil Dr. Duck will be back, and we will need to defeat him and rescue our duck friends as a team! We ALWAYS welcome our parents and children joining in the dressing up so please feel free to join us in your best superhero get up, as long as you don’t mind it getting wet! During this lesson our Dolphin armbands will be making an appearance. Whilst at Mini Swimming we limit the use of armbands, they can be a fantastic aid for independent swimming and building a child’s confidence and awareness of what their body can do.

April will also see the return of our Junior Lifeguard Programme which will take place during the Easter Break. During the three and a half hour lesson, the children will learn a range of first aid and resuscitation skills, personal water safety and rescue skills both in our classroom and pool. We ran this course in the summer last year and it was a huge amount of fun and the children all left with brand new skills and more importantly, smiles on their faces.

Hall of Fame

At Mini Swimming we love to recognise brilliance. Our Hall of Fame is dedicated to our Swimmers of the Week, Highlights of the Week and Teacher Awards. If your child has had an award, we would love it if you can share their photo with their certificate with us so we can add them to the hall of fame. You can see it here.

Here are a few of our fabulous swimmers…

Junior Lifeguard Programme

We are very excited to announce that this spring we will be holding our fantastic Junior Lifeguard Programme.

During the three and a half hour session, your child will learn CPR, water safety, and rescue techniques. The learning will take place at the Lexden Pool, in both our classroom and the pool, by two of our highly-qualified teachers.

If your child is aged 8+ and can competently swim 50m then we love to welcome them to come and take part.

Your child will need to bring:

  • Their usual swimwear (come beach ready)
  • Woggle
  • Goggles
  • Pj’s or clothes you don’t mind getting wet
  • A bottle of water

Everything else will be provided by ourselves. Grown-ups are not required to stay so go and have a few hours to yourself!

These exciting sessions will take place on the following date:

  • Tuesday 12th April – Lexden Pool 9:00 until 12.30
  • The cost is £60.00

Places are limited so please call and book now to ensure your child’s place – 01206 483933, payment can be taken over the phone.

We cannot wait to see your child there and train our next generation of Mini Swimming lifeguards! Here are some pictures of the last course.
