Welcome to the August 2023 Newsletter
We hope you all had a wonderful July and have been enjoying the start of the summer (Despite the pretty dodgy weather!) Those of you at school, we also hope you are all enjoying the summer break. Sports Day
We got into the competitive spirit this week, racing and using ball skills to work on strength, stamina, core muscles and confidence. We saw some synchronised swimming and celebratory jumpers before handing out medals and prizes!
Circus Week
This week we went down to the circus to work on our independence and strength on catamarans – Our little ones dived through hoops and we saw some daredevil jumps!
Singing in the Rain
Very in keeping with the summer we are having! We worked on water confidence and body positions to move through the water.
Down in the Jungle
This lesson is a firm favourite a Mini Swimming, we worked on our backs to practise floating/back swimming. We saw some jungle animals make an appearance in our strokes and big splashes in our jungle jumps!

Academy
Our Academy swimmers have been working hard on their push and glides. A swimmer who swims with the correct technique can travel in water with their body as close as possible to the surface of the water. Swimmers need to do a variety of drills and practices to learn the correct technique of different strokes.
Skills should be taught correctly and practised regularly to make sure skills are learned properly. Not doing enough streamlining and gliding practices, especially when learners are at the early stages of learning to swim, can result in inefficient stroke development and bad swimming habits. Bad habits that swimming teachers get to see very often are lifting up the head out of the water (rather than turning head to the side) during side breathing when swimming front crawl, taking a breath when swimming breaststroke in an uncoordinated fashion, and out of sync with arms and legs. We regularly perform drills that work on streamlining and gliding. In doing so, we are teaching the correct technique, right from the beginning.
The 25th of July was World Drowning Prevention Day. We worked on our Water Safety Skills and asked our child-only swimmers to come to class in their pyjamas. We worked on rotation and flotation in the water which is key for many reasons. These are also crucial life-saving skills. We have practised our float-to-live skills.
If you found yourself struggling in the water unexpectedly, your instinct would tell you to swim hard. But cold water could make you gasp uncontrollably. You should ‘Float-to-live’
The 5 steps to know how to float are –
1 – If you’re struggling in the water fight your instinct to thrash around
2 – Lean back, extend your arms and legs
3 – Gently move them around
4 – Float until you can control your breathing
5 – Call for help

The Lexden Pool is heated to a beautiful 33 degrees. We have changing facilities and some pool toys for you to enjoy. Max of 6 sets of parents and children per session.
The cost is £9.00 for 1 hour for 1 adult and 1 child. £2.00 for an additional adult or sibling.
There is no teacher but there will be a lifeguard present.

We loved welcoming Max, Tallulah, Arthur, Henry, Cole, Arabella, Nora,Lexi, Imogen, Niamh, Edward, Rafello, Effie, Elias, Hugo, Leo, Theofore Elias and Felicity in July to Mini Swimming. Hall of Fame
All our teachers are constantly looking for children in their classes who have achieved something for the first time or made a special effort in their classes. These special moments should be rewarded and our Hall of Fame is dedicated to our Swimmers of the Week, Highlights of the Week, and Teacher Awards. We try to take as many pictures as we can, but if your child has had an award and we didn’t manage to get a snap, we would love it if you can share their photo with their certificate with us so we can add them to the hall of fame.
