Welcome to the July 2023 Newsletter
We are now well into the Summer months and the sun has been out to play. We have seen some beautiful sunshine over the past few weeks. I hope you have all had the opportunity to be outside to enjoy some of this beautiful weather. Hopefully, some of that time has been spent swimming, whether it be in a paddling pool or perhaps a dip in the sea!
As always we would remind everyone to stay safe and practise what we have been learning in your classes.
From small babies who are learning vital life-saving rolling skills, to our Mini Turtles blowing bubbles and practising star floats, to our Whales and Sharks who zip up and down at the County High; water safety is vital for all of us and we would encourage everyone to stay within your depth if you are at all unsure of your skills in the water, especially if you venture out into the sea.
Now we are done with our safety message, let’s move on to what we have been up to this month!
Remember, you can view lots of the updates and pictures we share on our social media, and if you have any pictures or videos of your little ones swimming on holiday or on a day out – all our teachers love to see what their students are doing outside their lessons!

Baby and Pre-school Classes

In the Garden
This lesson we used the seat hold to work on core strength and stability. This hold will strengthen the baby’s spine and stimulate the vestibular system of balance.
Our older children worked on their independence and confidence to swim without the parents’ support using Delphin Arm Discs. We all worked on confidence to jump in.
Teddy Bears’ Picnic
Off to the woods we went for a Teddy Bears’ picnic, We worked on front-hold swimming which aided on body position and encouragement for kicking legs, parents walked backwards around the pool supporting their baby to work on separation and independence.
We saw some fantastic teddy bear rescues where the children threw their teddies (kickboards) into the water, jump in and rescue them
Wonderful Weather
We started off this week by practising our sun bathing. This meant we saw lots of relaxed bodies in the floating position. In typical British weather, the rain soon came and we moved to front swimming where we were working on water confidence as the rain showered us.
London Week
Off to London this week where we practised front and back swimming with rotations. This is a key skill to learn and super important we know how to roll our bodies over in the water.

Assessment Week
Finishing off June with our Baby and Preschool Assessment Week.
This assessment gave swimmers the opportunity to achieve one of the following awards;
Starfish (0-12m) 1,2,3 or 4
Clownfish (12-24m) 1,2,3 or 4
Seahorse (2-4 yrs) 1,2,3 or 4
Octopus (Formally Parent and child Sea Turtle)
* As the Octopus award is a stepping stone into a child only class there is just 1 award for this. This means that if a swimmer has passed their Octopus award we will look to move them up to a child only class. If they have not yet completed this award. You can expect to receive a Seahorse 3 or 4 award.
After your class your teacher will have given you a slip of paper, this will give you the level of award achieved. This piece of paper is your claim to a certificate, so please keep it safe! You now have the opportunity to purchase a certificate and a fabric badge that can be sewn onto a towel or costume. We do not have a record of what badges or certificates people have purchased before so you may wish to check what you have bought previously.
The cost of 1 badge and certificate is £4.20 – Collected from Stanway Pool, or £6.20 posted.
*If you would like to have the whole series, you may purchase awards up to and including the award achieved that day, for example – If you have for example achieved a Clownfish 3, you can purchase the 1 & 2 also. Each certificate is £1.50 & each badge £2.70
If you forget your money, do not fear, you can bring it this week or next – just make sure you keep your slip safe so you can pop it into the envelope with the money. Please do not pop money in an envelope without the slip as we will have no idea who the money came from, which makes it hard to send the right certificate as you can imagine!
We can not take card payments for certificates and badges, so please bring cash with you.
This is not an exam, there is nothing passed or failed. It is a recognition of what the children have achieved. Babies and children progress at different times with different milestones. New Class Added
Our Octopus level is the perfect step up from our Seahorse level, and really helps to prepare our swimmers for independent swimming. We have opened up a new weekend Octopus class Sundays at 14.30 in our Stanway Pool. If you are interested in joining this class, simply get in touch with the office. Academy Swimmers
Our child-only swimmers have been practising long slow bubbles and keeping their face in the water. While as adults, we see this as an easy task, children are only able to hold their faces in the water when they can control their own breath. This is a developmental step and it happens at different ages for every child. Some children are able to do this at a year old, whereas it takes others until they are 6 or 7. Practising is the only way this skill is developed and we are very proud of all our Mini and Sea Turtles for giving this such a good shot.
We have also now started to look at back swimming again and some of the water skills which will go on to be assessed in our Skills Assessment Week at the beginning of July.
Our Eagle Rays (formerly Advanced Sea Turtles), Sealions, Dolphins and above started off with back swimming. Being comfortable in the water is the real key to swimming on our backs – you need to be able to float in order to move your arms up – and we saw some fabulous attempts. Watching the Sealions and Dolphins swim up and down at CCHS is mesmerising! They all then moved on to the skills they need for butterfly, starting off with dolphin legs. It may seem odd to bring this in from such an early level, but it is vital that they learn this rolling movement when they are small to ensure they are comfortable enough to master it with their arms when they get a little bigger. Looking Ahead
As we move into August, we will see all our swimmers be tested on their water skills, with a lesson dedicated to this.
Those of you who have a little one who is going off to school in September. We will have been in touch with you regarding an after school space and finding a class that is suitable for you. Spaces after school and at the weekend are snapped up quickly! If you have not yet moved your little one into a class outside of school hours, speak with the office and we will go over available spaces with you so you are not disappointed come September.

The pools in Lexden and Stanway are available for private hire!
Including availability during the summer holidays
Come and enjoy our beautifully warm pools all to yourself or share some swim time with friends or family. There is a maximum of 4 adults and 4 children for any booking in most cases. The pool is exclusively yours for one hour, including changing time. We offer private hire as a one-off ad-hoc hire or a repeated booking at the same time every week for 6 weeks. The benefit of booking in blocks of 6 is that firstly it’s cheaper per session and secondly your slot is reserved for you for the weeks beyond your 6 weeks. We always give our regular slot bookers first opportunity to book again before the slot is released for others to book in.

Mini Splash Time – Each and every Monday, Thursday & Friday during term time.
Come and enjoy some swim time at the Lexden Pool. You may be looking to build on confidence, work on a particular skill , or simply enjoy some extra time in the water with your little one(s) . The Lexden Pool is heated to a beautiful 33 degrees. We have changing facilities and some pool toys for you to enjoy. Max of 6 sets of parents and children per session.
The cost is £9.00 for 1 hour for 1 adult and 1 child. £2.00 for an additional adult or sibling.
There is no teacher but there will be a lifeguard present.

July Private Lessons
Summer Holiday 121 Lessons are now available to book at Lexden and Stanway
We often get asked for private swimming lessons. The reason for parents choosing private tuition for their children can be varied, although mostly it is to improve a child’s confidence or to work on a particular stroke. You may also find a private lesson (or a course of them) useful prior to going on holiday or to the child starting swimming at school.
Whatever your objectives, each of our half hour long private classes is held by one of our fully qualified instructors who will tailor the class exactly to your child’s needs. First baby swim
It has been a very busy month for First Baby Swim sessions and we loved welcoming Henry,Rose, Edith, Summer, Maddox, Emily, Jessica, Stanley, Holly, Bethany, Autumn, Ayva, Mille and Penelope, to Mini Swimming. They each enjoyed a private swim to start and are now booked into group classes. If you have a little one due or recently born we would love to welcome you too! Just give us a call and we can talk you through exactly what the first baby swim package is all about.

Hall of Fame
All our teachers are constantly looking for children in their classes who have achieved something for the first time or made a special effort in their classes. These special moments should be rewarded and our Hall of Fame is dedicated to our Swimmers of the Week, Highlights of the Week, and Teacher Awards. We try to take as many pictures as we can, but if your child has had an award and we didn’t manage to get a snap, we would love it if you can share their photo with their certificate with us so we can add them to the hall of fame.
