Welcome to the June 2023 Newsletter

Finally, we can see summer arriving and with this, lots of opportunities to take little people swimming! Whether you are popping to your local pool, to the beach, or down to Dedham to enjoy the river water, we would remind everyone to stay safe and practise what we have been learning over the first 6 months of this year.

From small babies who are learning vital life-saving rolling skills to our Mini Turtles blowing bubbles and practising star floats, to our Whales and Sharks who zip up and down at the County High. Water safety is vital for all of us and we would encourage everyone to stay within your depth if you are at all unsure of your skills in the water, especially if you venture out into the sea.

Now we are done with our safety message, let’s move on to what we have been up to this month!

Remember, you can view lots of the updates and pictures we share on our social media, and if you have any pictures or videos of your little ones swimming on holiday or on a day out – all our teachers love to see what their students are doing outside their lessons!

King’s Coronation

We celebrated the King’s Coronation with a tea party and everyone was invited! We did our tea party shopping, made sure we were presentable for the King’s visit, and practised our Royal waves. There were lots of kicky legs from the babies and long scoopy arms for our Seahorses to try and gather all the goodies they could find!

Surf & Tugboat

Next, we practised some really important holds and rolls in our front Surf and Tugboat lesson. This lesson is slightly slower in pace so that we can ensure we are teaching our smallest swimmers how to use their reflexes and instincts to practise rolls in the water that could save their lives. Our Seahorses practised the same rolls in our Eggs for Breakfast game, which saw some fabulous scooping and kicking on our woggles to ensure they got an egg each.

The Wild West

Heading down to the Wild West next… in true cowboy style we rode horses, chased tumbleweed around the pool, and practised our safety holds as runaway trains. Our Clownfish and Seahorse swimmers practised their aim and throws down at Tin Can Alley and each and every teacher was left exhausted by the end of a day of “She’ll be Coming ‘Round the Mountain”!

Superheroes!

We ended May with our special themed Superhero Week. This gave each baby and toddler the chance to save our gaggle of superhero ducks from the Evil Dr Duck! We donned our superhero costumes and were so impressed with your superhero skills – the flying, amazing scooping and kicking, and your determination to defeat the bad guy at the end! Well done everyone on helping us finish May on such a high!

Academy Swimmers

Our child-only swimmers have been practising long slow bubbles and keeping their face in the water. While as adults, we see this as an easy task, children are only able to hold their faces in the water when they can control their own breath. This is a developmental step and it happens at different ages for every child. Some children are able to do this at a year old, whereas it takes others until they are 6 or 7. Practising is the only way this skill is developed and we are very proud of all our Mini and Sea Turtles for giving this such a good shot.

We have also now started to look at back swimming again and some of the water skills which will go on to be assessed in our Skills Assessment week in a few weeks’ time.

Our Eagle Rays (formerly Advanced Sea Turtles), Sealions, Dolphins and above started off with back swimming. Being comfortable in the water is the real key to swimming on our backs – you need to be able to float in order to move your arms up – and we saw some fabulous attempts. Watching the Sealions and Dolphins swim up and down at CCHS is mesmerising! They all then moved on to the skills they need for butterfly, starting off with dolphin legs. It may seem odd to bring this in from such an early level, but it is vital that they learn this rolling movement when they are small to ensure they are comfortable enough to master it with their arms when they get a little bigger.

Our Eagle Rays, Sealions, Dolphins, Whales and Sharks will be doing their water skills assessment in a few weeks too, and we cannot wait to see what everyone is capable of.

Looking Ahead

As we move into July, we will see all our swimmers be tested on their water skills, with a lesson dedicated to this. We have some new levels of Octopus (Formerly Parent & Child Sea Turtle) and Eagle Ray (Formerly Advanced Sea Turtle). We cannot wait to see what you think. Hopefully everyone will feel they are more in line with the amazing skills of our swimmers.

Our baby and pre-school swimmers will continue the term with the following lesson plans:

In the Garden

Teddy Bears’ Picnic

Wonderful Weather

London Week

Finishing off June with a fantastic SPORTS DAY!

Another reminder of our recommend-a-friend scheme. If you have a friend and they would like to join lessons, if they purchase a block of six lessons, then we will credit you with two free lessons! There is no limit on how many friends you can recommend either!

New Characters and Levels

As mentioned, we have redesigned all our levels to better reflect what we are now teaching. We are very proud of these and in addition to this, we have been able to separate two of our levels so that they are independent in their own right.

You will have received our email introducing our new characters; The Octopus and the Eagle Ray. These will replace our Parent and Child Sea Turtle level and our Advanced Sea Turtle level.

June Private Lessons

Summer Holiday 121 Lessons are now available to book at Lexden and Stanway

We often get asked for private swimming lessons. The reason for parents choosing private tuition for their children can be varied, although mostly it is to improve a child’s confidence or to work on a particular stroke. You may also find a private lesson (or a course of them) useful prior to going on holiday or to the child starting swimming at school.

Whatever your objectives, each of our half hour long private classes is held by one of our fully qualified instructors who will tailor the class exactly to your child’s needs. The classes can be booked as one-off sessions, and in Colchester only, can also be booked as a course (to be taken over consecutive weeks), which represents a small saving overbooking the classes individually.

Cost for private lessons

One child- £33.00 per lesson, or £185 for 6 booked together. You can check availability and book using the link below.

First baby swim

It has been a very busy month for First Baby Swim sessions and we loved welcoming Joey, Maddison, Otto, Chloe, Jesse, Theo, Mila, Everleigh, Calliope, Otto, Henry, Theo, Nina, Aurora, Rudi, Lily and Mallory to Mini Swimming. They each enjoyed a private swim to start and are now booked into group classes. If you have a little one due or recently born we would love to welcome you too! Just give us a call and we can talk you through exactly what the first baby swim package is all about.

Hall of Fame

All our teachers are constantly looking for children in their classes who have achieved something for the first time or made a special effort in their classes. These special moments should be rewarded and our Hall of Fame is dedicated to our Swimmers of the Week, Highlights of the Week, and Teacher Awards. We try to take as many pictures as we can, but if your child has had an award and we didn’t manage to get a snap, we would love it if you can share their photo with their certificate with us so we can add them to the hall of fame.

You will see that we have fantastic new selfie frames at each of the pools too –
Please remember to tag us in all of your photos – @mini__swimming_colchester @mini__swimming_chelmsford
