Welcome to the April 2023 Newsletter
The year already feels like it is flying by and we are very soon to take the first break of the year – the teachers will all be hanging up their costumes and swanning the streets with dry hair for a week!! (for anyone who missed the emails and Facebook alerts – we will be closed for lessons from 4th-10th April inclusively).
March has been a very busy month – we have had lots of dressing up, theme weeks and certificate writing! We cannot move on with the Newsletter without saying a massive well done (!!!) to every single academy swimmer who smashed their distance week assessments at the beginning of the month. From the Mini Turtles who dared let their teacher let go to achieve an “I swam on my own!” certificate, to the advanced Seaturtles and Sealions who smashed through 200m back crawl – we are so very proud of each and every one of you and the voices of some of the teachers by the end of assessment week showed this perfectly!
If you have not yet collected your certificate, we still have them all at Stanway and they can be collected anytime (certificates cost £1.50 – we have no badges for distances I am afraid), just pop on by.
We must also mention our Dolphin, Whale and Shark swimmers who took part in the first ever time trialled assessments. We were so happy with the way it worked and the effort put in by all the swimmers, some great times were achieved!
We have put so many posts on Facebook this month with all our dressing up, so don’t miss out, please do follow us to make sure you don’t miss out! We post lesson clips, hall of fame pictures, and all our news over there too.

We started March with a bang as we celebrated World Book Day at Mini Swimming. You will have seen all our teacher’s don their own outfits for the occasion and we hope you enjoyed watching us all get into the spirit. We spent the lesson looking at some well known books; Charlotte’s Web – where our smaller swimmers focused on their little harbour hold and holding on to their grown ups, whereas our bigger swimmers worked on their shoulder rotation for their front paddle – showing us all some fabulous scoopy arms! We also enjoyed Going on a Bear Hunt, and all the actions that come with that and also Dear Zoo – where we all got to look and explore the animals in the water, working on our reflex kicks which transfer into conscious kicks.
Old Macdonald’s Farm
Poor Old MacDonald Duck was not having much luck on his farm, with those pesky crows eating all his crops and he needed your help! As our seahorses climbed on their tractors to head down to the farm, our little ones practised their seat hold and core balance strength to head down there too. We took boat rides on our floats (which are fabulous for working on children’s streamlined body positions in the water) and sung all about Old MacDonald and his Pond – some of you might even have met the big WHALE living down there on the farm. Lastly, we collected up the farmer’s crops, using our kicky legs and wonderful arm movements and used our final song, Dingle, Dangle Scarecrow to scare away those crows for good!
Dear Zoo!
After a small taster in WBD week, we were back to go through this little gem page by page! Who knew that so many of the animals could relate to swimming and practising those keys skills – we had giraffes doing lovely long push and glides, we had some lovely frog jumps (along with one of those oh so important accidental submersions for the little ones), some great big lion paws as we explored the zoo animals and collected them up and some slithery snake swimming from side to side (which stimulates smaller babies to move their legs as water travels down their spines). This lesson has become a favourite of lots of teachers and it was so nice to see so many of you getting involved.
Rainbow Week
We finished off our last full week in March with Rainbow Week. This one is a little slower than we have been used to this term – more time to really work on the skills that will make all the difference when it comes to developing confident toddlers and children in the water. We used our woggles too, which allows even the smallest of babies to feel what it is like to support themselves and feel their own buoyancy in the water, as we chased balls of different colours around the pool. As always, we gave lots of praise for any leg movement, as this will encourage them to keep doing it! We then moved on to back swimming under the rainbow – being careful to avoid the rain as we went – back swimming is especially important for our Clownfish swimmers – lots of them are not keen, but if we leave it out, it means they could develop a real fear of being on their back in the water, which we do not want. Finishing off March we had a lovely parent and child swim – a chance for those with smaller babies to slow down and take a breath, and for those with bigger ones… to be ridden like a horse!…and learn about their own buoyancy and positioning in the water. We had some super solo attempts too and lots of snapping at people’s toes!

Academy Swimmers
All levels started the month practising for their assessments by going over the stroke and what would be expected. We find that doing the stroke directly before the assessment week means it is fresh in everyone’s minds and with some of the distances everyone achieved, this approach appears to be working. After smashing through distance week, our teachers pulled themselves together to start working on a new term for our academy swimmers – our Seaturtles started off with rotation. Rotation teaches them the skill of moving from front swimming to back swimming without having to use the side or any aid. This is such an important lifesaving skill. Since then, they have been working towards their independent front swimming, by practising their fast kicks together with their slow arms – a tricky thing for children to master!
All our other levels have been working on their breaststroke – breaking it down to ensure each part is understood and then piecing it back together. The order in which breaststroke is swum is very important, but takes time to master. We have seen some fantastic efforts so far though, even if your children have come out chanting – pull, breathe, kick, glide! Each level takes their stroke definition to a higher plain; Advanced Seaturtles are working on their arms and then their legs, Sealions are working on this with the added breathing and stamina improvement and Dolphins are putting all this together. It is fascinating to see how their strokes progress as they move up the classes.
We welcomed lots of our Advanced Seaturtle to the Colchester County High for a free trial following some fantastic assessments and have been thrilled that so many of you are now enjoying this pool If you would like more information on this pool or would like to come for a trial do get in touch.

Looking Ahead
As we move into April our academy swimmers will continue to work on their strokes in a rotation pattern, with a special water safety lesson at the end of April. We did this for the first time last November and the plan was so popular with the children and it teaches such important life skills that we have brought it back for the spring – pyjamas will be needed for all academy swimmers for this lesson – don’t worry though, we will let you know exactly when you need them nearer the time.
Our baby and pre-school swimmers will continue the term with the following lesson plans:
Assessment week
Easter
Circus Week
Under the Sea!
If you have already had your assessment lesson, don’t forget to pick up your certificate and badge from the Stanway Pool – it is £4.20 for both or £1.50 for just the certificate (this is £6.20 if you would like it posted). They are a lovely little memento to pop into your little ones keepsake folder and the badges work great on towels and blankets!
If you are missing any of the certificates (e.g. if you achieved starfish 2, but don’t have starfish 1) you are very welcome to purchase the one(s) you are missing too, so you have a complete set.
Another reminder of our recommend-a-friend scheme. If you have a friend and they would like to join lessons, if they purchase a block of six lessons, then we will credit you with two free lessons! There is no limit on how many friends you can recommend either!

First baby swim
It has been a very busy month for First Baby Swim sessions and we loved welcoming Eric, Lily, Barney, Morgan, Digby, Darcy, Madeleine, Florence, Amelia, Ernest, Harley, Jude, Gracyn, Milo, Bray, Rory, Hugo, Sabriel, Myles, Arthur, Arlen, Lucas and Oscar to Mini Swimming. They each enjoyed a private swim to start and are now booked into group classes. If you have a little one due or recently born we would love to welcome you too! Just give us a call and we can talk you through exactly what the first baby swim package is all about.

Hall of Fame
All our teachers are constantly looking for children in their classes who have achieved something for the first time or made a special effort in their classes. These special moments should be rewarded and our Hall of Fame is dedicated to our Swimmers of the Week, Highlights of the Week, and Teacher Awards. We try to take as many pictures as we can, but if your child has had an award and we didn’t manage to get a snap, we would love it if you can share their photo with their certificate with us so we can add them to the hall of fame.
You will see that we have fantastic new selfie frames at each of the pools too –
Please remember to tag us in all of your photos – @mini__swimming_colchester @mini__swimming_chelmsford
