Welcome to the March 2023 Newsletter
As the coldest months seem to be leaving us and the bright sun starts to shine through the Stanway and Lexden windows, we are reminded that lighter and brighter days are ahead. This always makes us think of our summer holidays – and everyone wants there to be a nice pool to cool down in, right?
While our minds wander to warmer times, we need to remember that if our little ones are not well equipped, water can be a very dangerous thing to be around and before you know it, that lovely holiday has turned into one big toddler-chasing nightmare. This is why bringing your children to swimming lessons is so important. While we always recommend that you start them young and make use of the beautiful reflexes that they were born with; really, swimming and water confidence is vital at any age and we are able to cater to all different needs.
Do you have a 1-year-old who has just learned to walk and you want them to be confident jumping into the pool with armbands, this summer? Do you have a 3 year old that is desperate to be in the water, but doesn’t yet know how to swim safely, meaning you cannot take your eyes off them around water? Or do you have an 8-year-old who is terrified of getting their face wet? We can offer you classes for all of these ages and needs – leaving you with children who are confident, safe, and happy in the water.
We applaud all our parents who have braved what has been a super-cold winter, to make sure their little one is safe this summer. You really are doing the right thing to make this summer the best and most relaxing yet, (if that is possible with little people around!)
Once again, please do follow us on Facebook to make sure you keep up to date on everything Mini Swimming! We post lesson clips, hall of fame pictures, and all our news over there.
Now, look at February…

Ducks!
We had a special guest come and join us this week – Mummy duck! Mummy duck asked some of you to take care of her baby ducks for her and you all did a fantastic job as our seahorses practised their leg kicks whilst showing the ducks around the pool on their kickboards. Our babies started with flip-flops – this is an amazing activity to strengthen a baby’s neck and core muscles in a nice gentle way. The older ones also grasp an understanding of how to adjust their heads so as not to get them dunked in the water. We also had a lovely parent and child submersion, where we saw lots of parents get their hair wet too as they went under with their child. Our bigger boys and girls then practised swimming with their armbands on whilst chasing mummy and her baby ducks around the pool, and we finished off with open water jumps – a fantastic way to build your toddler’s confidence in the water is to always get their faces wet!
All at Sea!
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go out swimming in the sea? Our little swimmers gave it a go this week in our lesson – All at Sea! Our babies concentrated on their independence in the water with our little harbour hold to start, this is a hold designed to let your baby hold on to us in the water, rather than us always being in control. As your little ones get bigger (and heavier) we then replace poor mummy and daddy’s tired arms with some catamarans. Catamarans are fantastic for progression, babies as little as 6 months old are able to do small amounts of independent swimming by themselves. This is just magical to watch as they kick their little legs. The bigger swimmers got to be sharks in the sea! Whilst shark fins can be difficult to master at first, they give the children the opportunity to adjust and learn about their own buoyancy and positioning in the water. We had some super solo attempts too and lots of snapping at people’s toes!
If you love me and you know it!
This month brings Valentine’s Day and we love a theme! Stanway and Lexden donned heart shaped bunting and big inflatable hearts and we went all out. This lesson focuses on socialisation and time with your little one away from the hustle and bustle of life. Our babies had the chance to explore the balls with their friends – with the older ones able to share and pass them about – what a lovely way to practise your social skills. We got the bubbles out as a special treat and then had a quiet swim with mummy or daddy, (or a grandparent), where the little ones got to relax and go with the flow of the water. Our seahorses practised their high-five hands, (using arm extension to perfect those scoopy arms), and had a chance to jump onto their parents’ backs and let you guys do some of the work! The braver seahorses also had a little go at our swan dive – going down under the water with mummy or daddy!
Down in the Jungle!
We end February (and hopefully those dark grey months!!) with one of our favourite lessons! We are off down in the jungle and everyone is invited. To get to the jungle we need to travel down the lazy river – practising our back swimming and relaxing in the water. Once we arrived, we spotted how many animals we could see – there were snakes and monkeys and giraffes, and even a naughty elephant or two!! All our swimmers practised swimming like some of their favourite animals and we even had a go at climbing out of the pool safely like a monkey and sliding back in like a snake. We hope you all enjoyed a little bit of Jungle Boogie too!

Academy Swimmers
Our Sea Turtles have spent February working on their breathing and front swimming. Getting their faces in the water is a key aspect of being able to swim independently and it is so important that we work on this skill. It might look as if we are just blowing bubbles, but what that is doing is teaching the children how to be in control of their breath in the water – this is a lifetime skill.
Our advanced Sea Turtles have also been looking at breathing and mastering the rotation for their side breathing in front crawl, and explosive breath for breaststroke. These skills take time – the more we practise, the quicker we are able to perfect the skills. Sea Lions have been dabbling in most of the strokes this month. We have focused on specific aspects and made sure we have our push and glides perfected. Push and glides are the baseline for all swimming, it is so important that our body position is spot on and we have seen some beautiful attempts this month.
We also had a good go at dolphin legs, which we will put together with the butterfly stroke when they move up a level – and wow, the attempts were amazing! Well done! Lastly, our Dolphins, Whales, and Sharks have been looking at how to tweak individual sections of their strokes, and our well qualified teachers, under the eyes of the senior coaches, have made sure they individually correct and offer guidance to each of our swimmers, to ensure that they achieve the best version of the stroke possible, at this stage.
All of our older swimmers are so keen – they pay attention, they take instructions well and try so hard – it means we are seeing improvement very quickly – especially in our lovely new pool at the Colchester County High.

Looking Ahead
As we go into March our academy swimmers will have their first distance assessment of the year. We will be concentrating on our back swimming this time and you will notice that the lessons leading up will now bring back swimming back into the spotlight. Back swimming is all about floating and knowing where your buoyancy is in the water, so we look forward to seeing the impressive distances we are sure we will see. The children will also look at proper turns and how to move their body through the water in the most effective manner.
At the Colchester County High, we are able to measure distances in a much truer light than we have been able to before. The children will have full use of the 25m length of the pool – less turning and more swimming!
We are also delighted to introduce timed assessments for our Dolphins, Whale and Shark swimmers. This is a fantastic way to prepare our swimmers for competitive swimming. We shall be running a practice for the Dolphins Shark and Whale swimmers w/c 6th March with their timed swims being the w/c 13th. Timed assessments will take place at Colchester County High and Columbus pools only. If you child swims in one of these classes at the Lexden Pool and you would like to have a timed assessment get in touch and we can get them booked in as an additional class (for free)
All certificates for their distance efforts will be available to purchase from the Stanway Pool and you will be given a slip after your class which details what distance your child will be collecting. The certificates are £1.50 if you collect them and £3.50 if you wish them to be posted. Sorry – no badges for distances.
Our baby and pre-school swimmers will continue the term with the following lesson plans:
World Book Day – please dress up if you would like to! Expect to see some great teacher costumes!
- Old MacDonald’s Farm
- Dear Zoo
- Rainbow Week
Just a reminder of our recommend-a-friend scheme. If you have a friend and they would like to join lessons, if they purchase a block of six lessons, then we will credit you with two free lessons! There is no limit on how many friends you can recommend either!

First baby swim
It has been a very busy month for First Baby Swim sessions and we loved welcoming
Jesse, Noah, Jack, Reuben, Samara, Tudor, Libi, Margot, Bodhi, Malachi, Xander and Presley to Mini Swimming. They each enjoyed a private swim to start and are now booked into group classes. If you have a little one due or recently born we would love to welcome you too! Just give us a call and we can talk you through exactly what the first baby swim package is all about.

Hall of Fame
All of our teachers are constantly looking for children in their classes who have achieved something for the first time or made a special effort in their classes. These special moments should be rewarded and our Hall of Fame is dedicated to our Swimmers of the Week, Highlights of the Week, and Teacher Awards. We try to take as many pictures as we can, but if your child has had an award and we didn’t manage to get a snap, we would love it if you can share their photo with their certificate with us so we can add them to the hall of fame.
You will see that we have fantastic new selfie frames at each of the pools too –
Please remember to tag us in all of your photos – @mini__swimming_colchester @mini__swimming_chelmsford
Here are a few of our fabulous swimmers…
